Robotic Coil De-banding / Destrapping Systems

Make the entry point to your production line safer & simpler.
Robotic debander cutting straps on a coil

END UNSAFE LABOR CONDITIONS AND DELIVER ON YOUR SAFETY GOALS.

Radian Robotics designs and integrates robotic coil debanding systems for steel and aluminum mills. Also known as robotic destrappers or automatic coil strap-removal systems, these cells locate, secure, cut and remove bands before transferring the scrap strap to a winder for controlled disposal.

The system reduces operator exposure to tensioned steel bands and repetitive manual cutting while maintaining the material flow required at pickling lines, cold-strip mills, galvanizing lines, tandem mills and coil-processing facilities. Each system is engineered around the customer’s coil range, band configuration, line controls, operating environment and production requirements.

Radian can also configure automatic de-banding systems for plates, profiles, tube stacks and other banded products.

Radian robots arrive on-site fully programmed and ready to integrate into your mill. The robot begins by confirming the size and location of the product and then locates the bands with a built-in laser system. Once all the band locations have been found, the robot cuts and removes them one at a time, using a gripper to keep the band under control. After each band is removed, the robot carries it to an accompanying winder that compresses it into a small, easily disposable package.

De-banding systems fit perfectly at the entrance of pickling lines, slitting lines, cold strip mills, galvanizing lines, tandem mills, and other locations.

What is a robotic coil debanding system?

A robotic coil debanding system automatically detects, cuts, removes and collects the straps securing a steel or aluminum coil. It replaces manual band cutting at the entry point of a processing line and can be integrated with coil conveyors, transfer cars, walking beams and mill control systems.

How automatic coil debanding works?

  • Coil arrival and line communication – The debanding cell receives the coil and confirms that it is secured in the operating position.

  • Coil and band detection – Sensors or vision locate the coil surface, band positions and applicable ID, OD or circumferential straps.

  • Band engagement – The robotic tool positions itself around the selected strap and secures it before cutting.

  • Controlled cutting and removal – The strap is cut and lifted away from the coil to reduce uncontrolled movement.

  • Strap winding or collection – Removed steel banding is transferred to the strap winder and compressed for disposal.

  • Completion confirmation – The cell confirms the sequence is complete and communicates with the production line.

Standard System Components

  • The robot scans the product to locate each band, then positions the debanding tool to grip, cut and remove it. The robot transfers the loose band to the strap winder without requiring manual handling.

    6-Axis Robot & Destrapping Tool

  • The strap winder receives each removed band and winds it into a compact, controlled bundle. This contains loose strapping and simplifies scrap handling and disposal.

    Strap Winder

  • The cabinet houses the controls that coordinate the robot, debanding tool, strap winder and safety devices. PLC and HMI interfaces can be integrated with existing mill and material-handling controls for commands, status information and alarms.

    Electrical / Controls Cabinet

  • Radian programs each system around the product dimensions, band configurations, removal sequence and production-line requirements. Customized scanning and exception-handling routines help the robot manage inconsistent band positions and recover when a band requires another attempt.
